Excellence is measured on a linear scale. We simply want "the best" students, right?
Perhaps if any member of the Supreme Court — or their clerks, or the Bar of the Court — had actually done any research science, even as undergraduates several decades ago, they might have some idea of why diversity matters in a physics class or lab. (And they might make fewer mistakes in science-related cases, too, but that's for another time.)
I had dinner w someone who was 'too busy to do social justice work in science'. They have 3 ro1s.
